Worksets
Overview
Set Active View Workset instantly switches the active workset to match the workset of the currently selected element. There is no dialog — the change happens immediately, making it ideal for assignment to a keyboard shortcut for fast, repeatable switching during modelling.

Key Features
- Instantly activates the workset of a selected element — no dialog, no clicks
- Designed for keyboard shortcut assignment
- Works with any workset-assigned element
- When multiple elements are selected, uses the first element in the selection set
Requirements
- The project must be workshared — the tool will display
File is not Worksharedand exit if not - At least one element must be selected before running
- The user must have permission to edit the target workset
Running the Tool
This tool has no interface. The workflow is:
- Select an element on the workset you want to activate.
- Run the tool — either find Set Active View Workset on the Bonus Tools Ribbon or use 115 Search Tools, or press the assigned keyboard shortcut.
- Verify — check the Active Workset dropdown in the Revit ribbon. It will now show the workset of the element you selected.
New elements placed after this point will be created on the newly active workset.
Assigning a keyboard shortcut (recommended)
The tool's full value comes from shortcut access. To assign one:
- Go to View tab → User Interface → Keyboard Shortcuts
- Search for
154orSet Active View Workset - Click Press new keys, type your desired combination, and click Assign
- Click OK
A short, memorable combination works best — something like Ctrl+Shift+W or Alt+W. Once assigned, the workflow becomes: click element → press shortcut → keep working.
Tips and Best Practices
- Assign the shortcut before your first session. The tool without a shortcut is useful; with one it becomes a genuine time-saver for any workshared project.
- Only the first element in a multi-selection is used. For predictable results, select a single element whose workset you want. If in doubt, check the workset shown in the Properties panel after running.
- Verify before placing. Glance at the Active Workset indicator in the ribbon after running the tool, especially when precision matters, to confirm the switch happened as expected.
- The target workset must be editable. If another user has the workset borrowed and set to non-editable, the transaction will roll back. Coordinate with your team if this occurs.
Common Use Cases
MEP discipline switching — Select a duct to activate the Mechanical workset, select a cable tray to activate Electrical, select a pipe to activate Plumbing. Eliminates dropdown navigation when coordinating across disciplines.
Level-based worksets — Select any element on a level-specific workset and press the shortcut to switch immediately. Ensures new elements are created on the correct level workset without navigating the workset table.
Design options — Each option has a dedicated workset. Select an element from the desired option and activate its workset before adding or modifying content.
Phasing and construction sequences — Worksets named by phase (Existing, Demolition, New Construction). Select a representative element from each phase to switch context quickly.
Troubleshooting
"File is not Workshared" message Worksharing must be enabled on the project. If the file should be workshared, check whether it was accidentally opened as a detached copy.
Nothing appears to happen The selected element may already be on the active workset — no change is needed. Also check the Output Dialog for any error messages. Confirm that an element is selected before running.
Transaction rolls back The target workset is likely set to Non-Editable, either because another user has it borrowed or due to workset permissions. Check the Workset table for the workset's current status.
The wrong workset activates When multiple elements are selected, the tool uses the first element in the selection set, which may not be the one you intended. Select only the specific element you want, then run the tool.
Keyboard shortcut not responding Verify the shortcut is correctly assigned in the Keyboard Shortcuts dialog and check for conflicts with existing Revit or Windows shortcuts. A Revit restart is sometimes needed after assigning new shortcuts.
Workset activates but new elements fail to place An active workset must be Editable for new elements to be created on it. If another team member currently holds it as borrowed, request they release it or coordinate workset access.
